The stars were out in full force at the 40th American Music Awards last night. Unlike other music awards, the AMAs are voted on by us – the people who love and listen to the music – and in return, the rich and famous brought some seriously covetable looks to the red carpet for us to fawn over.
Here are a few of the highlights:
Elisha Cuthbert was the epitome of last night’s biggest red carpet trend – GOLD. The actress looked like a golden goddess in Edition by Georges Chakra. If I had to make one change, it would be to trade out her dark purple clutch with something a little less jarring.
I can’t get over how amazing Stacy Keibler‘s legs looked in her in Collette Dinnigan dress. And although the dress and clutch seemed a bit disjointed from her pumps, those shoes definitely didn’t hurt her cause, elongating her legs and emphasizing her golden tan.
Kerry Washington made a bold choice with her lacy canary yellow Stella McCartney gown, matching clutch and coral pumps. The whole look was a bit unseasonable for me, but Kerry definitely knows her colors and looked fantastic.
Kelly Rowland‘s graphic, mirrored Naeem Khan dress was fantastic and had the star sparkling all the way down the runway. My favorite part of the look was her shoes, which perfectly complete the look from head to toe.
Christina Aguilera got some criticism for her curves last night, but I thought she was rocking her new bod in a purple shaded Pamella Roland gown that put the emphasis in all the right places. With a sleek hairdo and glittering accessories, her shoes were the only part that were a bit heavy for me.
Currently sitting on top of the music world, Taylor Swift was appropriately demur in a gold embellished lace Zuhair Murad dress. Although this long-sleeved, short-skirted look is nothing new from Taylor, she can always be counted on to pull it off with the perfect hair and accessories.
Perhaps she missed being part of the recently-filmed 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, but Heidi Klum was showing a lot of skin in Alexandre Vauthier. I absolutely adore Heidi, but I wish she’d opted for something longer and lower cut to show off her amazing neckline.
Pink’s Catherine Deane gown was a perfect mix of her rock edge and feminine side. I would have opted for a bright pink lip for a pop of color, but armed with an updated-classic updo and Cory Hart as arm candy, she looked fabulous doing her thing on the runway.
At first glance, Ke$ha was one of the biggest surprises last night in a peach colored lace dress and glamorous blonde locks. Her accessories were the last remnants of her former self – clunky black shoes, vampy nails and a spike-lined ear completed the look.
Jenny McCarthy rocked an edgy look last night with tall hair and a Dolce & Gabbana gown. Her lion belt was a bit much for me, but the dress itself was fit perfectly and I adored the way her hair and makeup perfectly complement the look.
Carly Rae Jepsen looked nice in her sequined Gomez-Garcia halter gown. At first I thought the background near her head was a bright pink earring – and I loved it. On second glance, I think the look needs more Carly personality to it. If only she’d actually opted for some neon earrings…
One person who was rocking neon last nigh was Nicki Minaj. The eccentric singer wore a Monique Lhuillier dress that we’ve seen multiple times before – on Julie Bowden and Paula Patton. Despite the threepeat, Nicki was holding her own in bold hair and accessories to match the lime green dress – and her big personality.
Jennifer Morrison had an almost Angelina-worthy moment in her high-slitted black Abed Mahfouz gown. The Once star was both shining and glowing in her shimmery dress. My only regret is that she didn’t opt for some strappy silver heels – the nude pumps, despite being nude, didn’t blend in the way I think she was hoping they would – perhaps because of her bold black toenails.
Gwen Stefani went 180-degrees in a different direction than most of the other stars in an oversized Balmain jacket and leather pants. The casual look may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but I thought the star looked like classic Gwen, and rocked her unique look with style and grace.
Carrie Underwood was one of my favorites last night in an uncharacteristically-colorful Abed Mahfouz dress. Her berry gown was accessorized with gold pieces that gave the whole look a lux feel. I usually prefer updos with high necklines, but in this case, I think the casual hair adds just the right touch of softness.
No one does the pixie look like Ginnifer Goodwin, who was looking like a fairy princess in Oscar de la Renta and solver accessories. I would have pictured this dress on one of the young Hollywood stars, but Ginnifer proves me wrong.
Socialite Phoebe Price went for a big statement in head to toe gold sequins, topped off with oversized black and pearl accessories. The whole look was showy and made a statement – but not in the way she was going for. At least her makeup was pretty.
Hayden Panettiere was all smiles in an iridescent dress with decorated gold straps and champagne accessories. And who could blame her? She looked absolutely stunning and showed up with a NFL star on her arm. I was worried that Hayden would look like she was dressed by the costume department from her new show Nashville, but this girly look and her simple makeup kept her looking like good old Hayden.
Gloria Estefan and husband Emilio were like earth meets water at the show. Gloria’s mossy-looking dress was accessorized with gold jewels. The dress and color aren’t my favorite on Gloria, but I think an interesting updo would have made a huge difference for this look.
Jordin Sparks was a surprise miss for me in a graphic Etro gown. The print itself was nice, but the illusion top seemed off-centered and sloppy when combined with such an elaborate dress. Still gotta love that winning smile.
Lucy Hale was somewhat forgettable in Elizabeth & James, silver accessories and red pumps. Perhaps it was that the dress looked like it needed to be ironed, but the Pretty Little Liars star’s outfit seemed thrown together last-minute based on the standard black-silver-red go-to combo.
Who were your best and worst dressed at the show?
