At the 85th Academy Awards last night, host Seth MacFarlane made some hilarious jokes, but also had some major misses (Seth – jokes about Lincoln’s assassination? It will always be too soon.). Hits and misses weren’t limited to the Oscars’ plucky host though. The stars were out in full force at the event giving us their fashion best during the biggest red carpet event of the year.
Here are some of the major style winners and losers from the night:
Yet again, Zoe Saldana took the proverbial cake for me at this year’s Oscars. Donning a gorgeous Alexis Mabille Couture dress, Zoe found a perfect balance between hard and soft, black and white, elaborate and simple, feminine and sporty. I wasn’t a big fan of the belt at first, but it grew on me by the end of the night. Neil Lane jewelry, Roger Vivier shoes, and a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch finished the winning look.
Sandra Bullock was at her Sandra finest in a lace and sequined Elie Saab gown. I’m so happy she stuck with a nude liner underneath and left the hem sheer to add a bit of intrigue. Her stunning crystal hair jewel is also guaranteed to spark a hair accessory revival. A Daniel Swarovski clutch with gold chain topped off the ensemble.
Everyone had high hopes for Jessica Chastain on the red carpet, and she did not disappoint wearing the designer of the night, Armani Prive. Jessica’s pale-bronze dress could have made her look washed out, if it weren’t for the base color perfectly matching her coppery locks, and her luscious red lippie. Styled to perfection.
Amy Adams looked imperfectly beautiful in a grey shabby-chic Oscar de la Renta gown. A loose updo continued the look from head to toe.
Jennifer Aniston got a lot of flack from critics for playing it too safe in her red Valentino gown, but I say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. She looked stunning and confident – purely Jen.
Charlize Theron was certainly living up to her role as brand ambassador for Dior in a white dress with an embellished peplum waist. The grace with which she rocks the boyish haircut never ceases to amaze.
Michelle Obama hopped on the screen to surprise the nominees for Best Picture with the presentation of the award. Wearing a Naeem Khan dress in shining silver. Fun fact: Iranian media found the dress too risque and photoshopped sleeves onto the dress overseas. I’m sure she still looked amazing.
Anne Hathaway decided on her dress last minute, and I think it showed – her Prada dress looked ill-fitted. I get that she was going for mod, but those boob darts were distracting. They were so noticeable, in fact, that they’ve become a new meme. Yikes.
It pains me to put Kerry Washington on the losers list, but her beautiful crystallized Miu Miu dress seemed a tad unseasonal, and didn’t do her any favors in the height department. Perhaps another color or an updo would have done the trick.
Kristin Stewart’s Reem Acra dress wasn’t the problem at the Oscars. In fact, I think the dress was the only thing that went right. Not only was Kristin limping around, using crutches, and covered in bruises on her arms, she looked strung out on something. Very unfortunate for such a fabulous gown to go to waste.
I love Melissa McCarthy, so I was sad to see her looking so sloppy and dated in a grey David Meister gown. All I could think of was Texas or Nashville gone wrong. The black panel at the base of the dress was also quite distracting. On the upside, her presentation with Paul Rudd for Animated Short was funny and cute.
